Description:

MEETING LOCATION: Meet at the downtown bus station across from the McDonald Theatre's mural featuring two people with heads of birds

Let's go for a Rat hunt while puttin’ on the Witz!

In 2017 nine artists from six different countries visited Eugene. Armed with paintbrushes and spray cans they created a variety of murals around town for residents to enjoy and even debate. While most of the artistic endeavors were on a large scale several artists, Blek le Rat and Dan Witz, created images on a smaller more intimate level.

Blek le Rat (Xavier Prou) is a father of stencil art. He painted 10 playful designs around Eugene, though 1 was covered apparently by accident this past summer. His work was apparently an inspiration for Banksy.

Dan Witz is a master of trompe l’oeil or visual illusions that trick the eye. Eleven of his haunting images are sprinkled around the downtown area.

Part of the micro-art's mystery and enjoyment is searching them out. Our walk today will focus on the Eugene downtown area between Pearl Street and Lincoln Street and between 7th and 11th Avenues.

We will try to find as many designs as we can, though I'm not sure where they all are so this will be an exploration for everyone. The walk will be a moderate pace; start time is 9 am, we'll finish latest by 12 pm. There will be a few stairs (about 50 feet) as we gain some elevation to see one of the pieces. We will stop for coffee or tea at one point to provide some warmth and a bathroom break. Meet at the downtown bus station across from the McDonald Theatre's mural featuring two people with heads of birds. The walk goes rain or shine.

Trip Report

In 2017 nine artists from six different countries visited Eugene, Oregon. Armed with paintbrushes and spray cans they created a variety of murals around town for residents to enjoy and even debate. While most of the artistic endeavors were on a large scale several artists, Blek le Rat, and Dan Witz, created images on a smaller more intimate level. Blek le Rat (Xavier Prou) is a father of stencil art. He painted 10 playful designs in the downtown area, though 1 was covered, apparently by accident, this past summer. His work was an inspiration for Banksy. Dan Witz is a master of trompe l’oeil or visual illusions that trick the eye. His haunting images are sprinkled around Eugene, 11 are in the downtown area. Part of the micro art's mystery and enjoyment is searching them out. Our walk today focused on the geography between Pearl Street and Lincoln Street and between 7th and 11th Avenues. We saw most of the micro-art pieces on the 2-hours walk, though afterward several of us looked around for another 15 minutes. One participant flagged us down, she had found a well-hidden piece. Like all of Dan Witz's work, it was hiding in plain sight! One of his works still remains hidden on Eugene's streets.
