Trip Report

Departing at 8:00 a.m. to Coburg and Harrisburg, to the Peoria Road, where we picked up pastries at the Mennonite Country Bakery, which we enjoyed at our rest stop at Helmick State Park. Next to the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge - no birds on this stormy day; two weeks earlier there were hundreds of ducks and geese. The highlight of the day was a return visit to the Evergreen Air Museum, home of the Hughes flying boat, a WWII B.17 and other vintage aircraft. Several of us climbed into the B.17 Flying Fortress and twisted, tip-toed and slithered through the cramped interior. Elden Bevens, a veteran gunner in 1944-45, gave a most interesting talk of his experiences. A leisurely lunch at the Hotel Oregon in McMinnville was delicious. Then on to the Brigittine Monastery near Amity where we viewed the Brothers’ 15-minute prayer vespers service. Many of our group purchased chocolates, which is the Order’s only fund raising enterprise. Much of our travel was on scenic secondary roads in lovely farm country. Following a brief stop at the Dallas City Park, driver John Bunker returned us to Eugene at 5:30 p.m.

Riders were: Ethel Allen, Don Baldwin, Helen Barnard, Jean Blankenship, John & Marian Borchardt, Lloyd Bond, Dar Bush, Ingrid Carmichael, Nicole Chase, Bette Hack, Dora Harris, Marjorie Jackson, Jean Jensen, Dodie Leppmann, John & Lenore McManigal, Barbara & Walt Miller, Joyce Mixer, Joyce Norman, Pat Peterson, Liz Reanier, Nan Smith, Emil Smith, Harvey Speck, Janet Speelman, Carol Stroud, Dorothy & Ed Sullivan and trip leader Ray Jensen.
