Description:

Antarctica is the world's biggest desert and has the world's largest ice sheet. Here, nature reigns - adorable penguins, curious seals, thousands of seabirds, and sculpted ice bergs. For naturalists and historians, the surrounding islands, including South Georgia, the Falklands, and the South Orkney Islands, are equally appealing. Lana will share photos of her three-week experience in this extraordinary environment.

Trip Report

Lana Lindstrom, a familiar face to many Obsidians, was May’s potluck speaker. She drew 62 diners for the potluck and a full house of 92 for her presentation about her trip to Antarctica and the surrounding islands. She began with some interesting facts about the continent and then took us on her three-week journey, beginning with describing her ship, explaining how the actual route they took drastically changed because of weather conditions, what they wore for warmth and safety, and the efforts taken to ensure their clothes and shoes didn’t contain foreign plants and animals that could contaminate the areas. Fun parts of her trip included many folks taking the “polar plunge” into the cold, cold water, and also encountering penguins so friendly and curious that staff needed to keep brushing them away from the voyagers.
