Trip Report

We began this year's Exploring Hood trip with a 9.7 mile loop from Newton Ck, to Timberline Tr., across Heather & Clark Cks, through Hood Meadows and down to unusual Umbrella Falls. With the sparkling water cascading from the mountain top & wildflowers along the creeks & on the meadows, this hike was a good start to our Hood adventure.
We camped at quiet Still Ck campground and set out the next morning to drive the twisting, gravel road up to the Timberline TH at Cloud Cap. Timberline tr. loops for 41.5 mls around Mt. Hood. And, the section south from Cloud Cap is the highest & some of the most dramatic tr. on the loop. Being above the tree line, we had continuous views of rough, glacier covered, 11,249 foot Hood. There were still some patches of snow lingering in the gullies as we made our way to 7,335 ft, the highest point on Timberline tr., & found some rare shade for lunch. This was an out & back hike & as we made our way north in the afternoon clear skies gave us expansive views spanning from the Columbia River Plateau to Mounts Adams, Rainier & St. Helens. Along the way, we took a side trip to stone Cooper Spur Shelter and some in our crew hiked up the user tr. to get a better view of Eliot Glacier.
Following our hike, some of us swam among the paddle boarders, & not very shy ducks, at Trillium Lk. Osprey flew over our heads. We returned to the lk at sundown to view the sun setting over magestic Mt. Hood.
For our last day we hiked along exceptionally beautiful Cold Spring Ck to 100 foot Tamanawas Falls. After the blazing sun the day before, it was refreshing to hike in lush, green forest; shadded by Hemlock, Nobles, Alder & Vine Maples.
A Tamanawas is a benevolent, guardian spirit, and we certainly felt we had one along with us on our wonderful excursion to Mt. Hood.
