Description:

Over the rivers and through the mountains to SISTERS we will travel. The backroads to Hwy 34 and Hwy. 20 will be vivid with color and the waters of the falls and streams crystal clear. Coffee at the Calapooia State Park will be hot and the goodies yummy to the last bite. Our destination, SISTERS, will find us shopping and dining and walking the city sidewalks, a great agenda for all. So fill your purses with some money; there will be plenty of quaint shops and cafes and trinkets for all. Come along with your fellow Obsidians and friends, join in the fun- relax on the luxury coach line and leave the driving to the driver of MTR. Loading the bus at 7:40 AM. Shopko parking lot, driving away at 8:00 AM. We invite you all to come share a day of pleasing sites, great fellowship and of course, good food. Bring your camera and good walking shoes. We will make some great stops along our route over the mountains and back home. Looking forward to hosting you on a beautiful day of color. Bill, Barb, & Paul

Trip Report

October 8th was a beautiful day to be on a bus trip seeing the sights and being engulfed in the atmosphere of fall weather and colors. Our bus tour started at 8:00 a.m. traveling north on Coburg Road to McKenzie View Drive. On this trip we had a good view of the river from near its confluence with the Willamette, about 5 miles west of Armitage Park, to its beginning at Clear Lake near the McKenzie Pass. Traveling along the back side of the Coburg Hills through the little towns of Marcola and Mohawk we saw a few signs of color along the way, but the vivid full colors did not come into play until we had reached about 3500 – 4000 ft. elevation. It was disappointing to see the remains of the fire near Hoodoo Ski Area still very blackened. However the vine maple along the roadside, the new noble fir and some pine along with other vegetation made for a beautiful color combination of vivid red, yellow, orange and many shades of green. Our route took us through Sweet Home, with a coffee break at Cascadia State Park, giving us many great sights. We arrived in Sisters about 11:30 a.m. A scattering of 24 Obsidians and friends into the town was quite a sight. Some meeting relatives for lunch, some enjoying lunch at their own cabin and several groups just enjoying the many quaint lunch opportunities on the Sisters strip.

Leaving the area about 2:30 p.m. allowed us to take a side trip to the headwaters of the Metolius River, a first for several of the riders. The blue sky, Mt Jefferson with a touch of snow and of course the crystal clear Metolius flowing out of the ground was a lovely sight. Lots of cameras were snapping in this beautiful, picture perfect weather. A quick stop at Sahalie Falls was also a first for some riders. Following the McKenzie River back to Eugene we saw almost the entire river from start to finish. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day to see what Mother Nature had up her sleeve for 24 happy Obsidians and friends.
