Trip Report

This was the year for color. As we drove out Marcola Road to Hwy. 20 there were many trees turning yellow and red. At Sweet Home we stopped to view the historic bridge moved there from Holly and rebuilt by high school students. We continued on the Santiam Hwy. by Foster Dam; it was raining but this somehow added to the beauty of the yellow and thick moss that covered many trees. We stopped at the Cascadia State Park for our morning break and Ray led a three-quarter-mile hike into Soda Creek Falls. Leaving Cascadia S.P., we continued on the Santiam Hwy. to the Clear Lake cutoff. Much of the red maple color was gone in the lava but there was still lots of yellow. We stopped at Sahalie Falls and arrived at the Log Cabin Inn around 12:30 for lunch. It was a very cozy atmosphere and we were glad to be out of the rain for lunch. We had excellent service and marionberry cobbler for dessert. We left about 2:00 and retraced a small portion of McKenzie Pass to stop at Belknap Springs for about an hour, arriving home around 4:30. Our driver was John Bunker. Thanks to the Hospitality Committee and to Ray and Ewart. Enjoying fall color were Ethel Allen, Ewart Baldwin, Tom Brinton, Ingrid Carmichael, Mary Lee Cheadle, Mary Hammer, Ray & Jean Jensen, Rosella Jones, Ben Kirk, Gloria Layden, Leah Manstrom, John & Lenore McManigal, Barbara & Don Payne, Liz Reanier, Dick & Janet Speelman, Pauline Sievers, Corrinn Walden, Hawke Williams, Vera Woolley, Ellen Zeigler and Bette Hack (leader).
