Trip Report

Choosing a suitable date for our traditional Fall Color Trip involves guesswork and hope. This year we did see very good color in the High Cascades, and despite variable rainy weather, we enjoyed the trip.

Our coffee and goodies break was inside the McKenzie Ranger Station, feasting on a delicious birthday cake prepared by Barbara Beard for her ____? birthday.

Then on to spectacular Sahalie Falls, and Fish Lake, where the Santiam Wagon Road Remount Station is being restored. We then traveled over the Santiam summit and immediately enjoyed sunshine. We stayed in Sisters for two hours, shopping and replenishing calories.

Our return was via highway 20, down the South Santiam River, with a brief stop at Hackleman Old Growth, where the trails were in poor condition. We all enjoyed ice cream at McDonald's in Sweet Home and then drove through the Mohawk Valley and McKenzie View Drive to Shopko at 5:15pm. Our driver, Jay Gunsolley was excellent. There were 31 riders, including 10 nonmembers.
