Description:

Our search for fall color this year will take us north into the Tualatin Valley. This valley is filled with orchards, vineyards, produce farms and natural areas, much like the Willamette Valley. We will travel backroads and make some stops along the way, such as, Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve in Hillsboro, a 635 acre preserve of quiet open waters, wetlands and forests. It is said that over 130 species of birds reside and migrate through the Preserve. The new Education Center houses the first authentic bald eagle’s nest recovered from the wild, this unique project has an intriguing story. Rice Northwest Rock and Mineral Museum is another destination. This amazing museum is home to many fascinating and beautiful galleries and displays: Northwest specimens like thunder eggs and sunstones; precious minerals and gems; a petrified wood collection; a meteorite display; a fossil gallery; and agate gallery. On top of all this, the museum grounds are full of hidden treasures, surprises and possibly some wildlife. Apple orchards and produce farms are also potential stops; there are many to choose from…come along and see what we will find. BRING A SACK LUNCH and we will find a pleasant place to picnic. Note: You might want to bring a cooler for shopping.

Trip Report

It was a cool, cloudy morning as we headed north on I-5 hoping for no rain. When we stopped at the Santiam River rest area for coffee break the weather had brightened considerably, allowing a good time to get acquainted with some first time bus riders. Leaving I-5 north of Salem, we began our journey through beautiful farm land towards the Tualatin Valley. Twisting and turning our way over a part of Chehalem Mountain we were afforded wonderful views of the valleys below and spots of beautiful fall color. First stop was Jackson Bottoms Wetlands visitor center to see the 1,500 pound eagles nest on display. We viewed an interesting video showing how the section of a dying tree was salvaged with the nest intact and eventually installed at the center. Many other bird and animal displays are available, general consensus was that we should return some spring when we have time to hike the trails and observe migrating birds that stop on the ponds. Next stop was Smith Berry Barn Farm where owner Rich Hildner told us about the 30 acre farm & produce raised here. We used their nice picnic area to enjoy our sack lunches and spent some time shopping for produce and other items. Then it was up the road to Rice Northwest Gem & Mineral Museum to visit their many display rooms. Very few of our riders had been there before and were really impressed with the museum layout. The incredible beauty of the rocks, minerals, gemstones, fossils, meteorites & lapidary art on display is amazing. A very unique display features assorted rocks under black light which brings out unexpected vivid colors. Rice Museum’s displays are considered the finest in the Northwest and one of the best in the nation. Due to traffic congestion on Highways 217 and I-5 we were a bit later than planned in getting home, but all agreed they were glad to have visited these sites.
