Trip Report

With four men in a busload of 27, the Fall Color trip went off with success, in spite of a delayed arrival of the bus. Of the four men, one was the driver, the other was Bill Burwell, the tour guide. The scheduled driver did not show up. Louise Thurber called the bus company and caught the owner, Don Moorehead, in town for the first time in three months! Departure at 8:55 a.m. upon arrival of new driver, Lee Cayser, and bus. The weather was beautiful for distant views from Indian Ridge and others, with routing by Bill Burwell, who knows the ground by heart, having followed his father, Dave, in past years. Up Quartz Creek we saw helicopter logging, next to the bus. Learned that working right under one was a nasty business because of all the dust and dirt raised by the terrific down draft from a very big helicopter. Went up a long way among many draws, with color along the way. Lunch in beautiful no-wind weather with the Sisters sky line in the background. We could not go to the lookout atop Indian Ridge (elevation 5,405 ft.): the Forest Service has made it available for renting, so a gate blocks the final run. Coming down, we found the east-facing rocky cliff which we saw in full scarlet blaze on our first Fall Color trip some 10-12 years ago; Jennelle Moorhead, now in Arizona, exclaimed so loudly that we had to come back the next year. Later years we never saw such color again. This year was equally great, though not so scarlet - it was dark red, and worth the trip. Came down past Cougar Reservoir, which had very low water. We were at the Village Cafe by 3:00 p.m for "black and blue" pie for some, and a good social time. In to SEHS parking lot by 4:45.

Taking part were Rita Baxter, Mary Bundy, Ingrid Carmichael, Mary Lee Cheadle, Bernie Claypool, Ardis Ebbighausen, Dencie Edlund, Bette Hack, Helen Johnson, Lillian Johnson, Rosella Jones, Bea Lefevre, Mary McLaughlin, Cleora Mersdorf, Perry Morrison, Hazel Peck, Bonnie Rickard, Lois Schreiner, Grace Smith, June Smith, Louise Thurber, Marjorie Townes, Hawk & Ruth Williams, and Bill Eaton (trip leader).
