  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 02/16/2019

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

The trail begins at Crescent Lake Sno-park and heads northwest for about a mile before turning north through heavily wooded Ponderosa pines and mixed firs. After another mile, the trail bends to the west and begins to level out in a more open lodgepole pine forest. We'll eat lunch at the lake where, if the weather is clear, we'll have good views of Redtop and Lakeview Mountains. We'll follow our tracks back out on our return to the cars. The slopes are generally gentle, but there are a few steeper sections. The trail can be icy under the trees.

Trip Report

Eight of us piled into two vehicles for the trip to the mountains. The snow level down to about 2,000 feet and at about 2½ miles west of the tunnel on Hwy 58, traffic was held up for a half hour while we waited for a snow plow to pull two semi-trailers and trucks out of the drive lanes. At the Crescent Lake Sno-park, we found outstanding skiing conditions with up to a foot of fresh powder. A couple of the more energetic skiers took on most of the trailbreaking. As we neared the lake, previous tracks were often buried by new snow, making it a challenge to stay on route. After a short lunch break at the lake, we had a great glide for most of the way out. We were back at the sno-park at 3:00 PM. Although up to 4 to 6 inches of new snow was forecast for the day, we experienced very little snowfall and the sun even broke through the clouds a few times.
