Trip Report

Six folks watched the film screening of Land/Trust followed by a discussion at the UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History. The film, produced by a woman for her Master of Fine Arts at UC Santa Cruz, documents the efforts of a non-federally recognized tribe, Amah Mutsun, in stewarding the land at Ana Nuevo State Park (between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz) on the CA coast. The tribe is working to reestablish coastal prairie habitat by removing species like Doug Fir that have encroached due to fire suppression and planting native species grown from seed on site. The project involves partnerships between the tribe, CA State Parks, researchers from the UC System (archeologists, ethnobotanists), and community members. Many thought provoking ideas: collaboration, goals for restoration, foodscapes, tending vs managing, and role of humans in the landscape.
