Description:

Early leave time to beat the valley heat. Finley is noted for birding but this is a hike. I will point out areas that are good for birding for those who are interested. This is a lovely hike a mixed forest of oaks and firs. We will combine the Woodpecker trail with the Mill Pond trail. At one point you get a great view of the valley. We will stop at headquarters for a snack break. There is the possibility to stop at the Monroe brew pub for lunch for those interested. The trail is a combination of old farm roads an trails. Low elevation, means poison oak along the edges so I advise log pants. They do a good job of trail grooming but just in case.

Trip Report

7:30 is an early leave time but it achieved our goal of being done before the worst of the heat. The Woodpecker trail is closed until fall for rehab so we stopped at some of the birding blinds. We were treated to a trio of baby swallows looking down at us in the first and twenty white pelicans in the second. It is very dry at Finley right now but beautiful. The poison oak lis bright red. We were done by 11:45am just in time for a great lunch at the brew pub in Monroe.
