Description:

McKenzie River Trust (MRT) representatives will join us as we explore work that has been conducted at Finn Rock Reach. The 278-acre property which was acquired by MRT in 2015 features 2 miles of McKenzie River front property with channels, ponds, and wetlands ideal for area habitat. Fire activity in 2020 created an opportunity for enhancement of salmon and other fish habitat. We will wander the area viewing the improvements and tour the wetland area. We estimate returning to the Eugene/Springfield area by 2-3 PM

Due to the recent work in the area, trails may be rough and uneven, so hiking poles are advised.

Obsidian COVID-19 protocols will be followed. Those carpooling masks will be required, and participants should be vaccinated.

Trip Report

Eight Obsidians had the opportunity to visit phase 1 of restoration project work completed at McKenzie River Trusts (MRT) Finn Rock Reach. MRT Executive Director, Joe Moll, lead the group through the project area which had been ravaged by the Holiday fire just 13 months earlier. Project goals include increasing wetland areas, slow and spread water across the floodplain, improve juvenile Spring Chinook Salmon habitat and increase nesting habitat for Western Pond Turtles. The group enjoyed good fall weather as we walked the project area and learned about the project and impacts of the Holiday Farm Fire on the area.

The July Bulletin is online now.
