Trip Report

On Tuesday, June 21, we traveled via the Peoria Road and Hwy. 99-W to the Flying "M" Ranch, located in Yamhill County, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch served in the lodge's spacious dining room. Flying "M", once a wagon and coach stop between Portland and Tillamook, is now a rustic resort with both modern and historic flavors. An interesting feature was the bar fashioned from a huge Douglas fir and supported by two pair of logging tongs. (Very unique, or so we were told, as we dutifully observed the Obsidian rules about abstinence.) We then traversed the Coast Range using the scenic Nestucca River route to Hwy. 101 and then inland to the headquarters of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. We assembled in their new community center where several Elders described the history of their people, the organization, plans for economic development, and the medical and social services provided. Our hosts were most gracious and generously provided us with refreshments and even a snack sack as we departed. The public and the Obsidians are invited to their annual pow-wow held during the third weekend of August. The stop at Grand Ronde was a delightful bonus. We had a long and very enjoyable day.
