Description:

This is the FOURTH ANNUAL CLARE TUCKER MEMORIAL FOUR IN ONE CONE HIKE

SNOW UPDATE: I was doing trail work in the Willamette Pass area, and the snow level was 5500' (slight), with 4-6 inches in the forest over 6200'. There may be shaded or north facing parts of the hike (Four in One Cone faces south regarding trail), so expect maybe some snow and a few slick areas. It shouldn't be a problem.

This is a solid moderate hike to Four in One Cone, which was formed 1790 years ago or thereabouts. The trail leaves from 242 and goes 3 miles to the first of two volcanic areas. It then goes back into the forest before reappearing on the open plain with a path up to the cone which gains 160’. We will have lunch on the cone if the weather is favorable for it; otherwise, we will eat in the woods, where there is shelter.

I'd like to be done no later than 3 and maybe 2:30, since it gets dark earlier in October (then the sun runs "fast" compared to the clock).

I may wear them, because they serve as another layer for my lower legs. Poles are useful in the volcanic area and on the cone. Have good rain and warm weather gear. If you are new, bring comfortable shoes for the trip home. It is nice to get out of the boots.

Trip Report

This year's weather was completely opposite to last year's rain and fog. We had bright sunshine, snow on the trail in places, but a beautiful day to be on Four and One Cone. We could see Mt. Hood and the northern Oregon Cascades, Yapoah Crater, Black Crater, Collier Cone, Faith and Hope (the northern Sisters), the Husband, and Scott Mountain. After lunch on top, we returned the way we came. Some spotted a Clark's Nutcracker. I was sweep for 95% of the hike, which was just fine, given the recent work on a couple of Nordic Trails. Everybody got back to the cars in good shape. This was the Fourth Annual Clare Tucker hike.
