Getting Around Eugene by Bike

Description:

Riding a bike for short trips is green, healthy and fun, and Eugene has a lot of paths, bike lanes and even crazy new traffic signals to make it easier—but many people still find bicycling in town intimidating, or just don't know how to get started. On this trip, we’ll ride to a few common destinations, and explore how to choose a route, what equipment helps for in-town bicycling, tips for riding safely and with confidence, and how to re-capture the joy of riding a bike that you experienced as a child.

This will be a short, flat, slow-paced ride--about 10 miles, and to places in central/south Eugene (the library, REI, the YMCA, Prince Puckler's, etc.) We'll finish riding by about 11 a.m. and finish up at a bakery/coffeeshop for goodies and conversation.

Bring a working bicycle (just make sure there’s air in the tires and the brakes work) and a helmet.

Trip Report

Seven Obsidians, with varying degrees of experience in riding a bike, took off on a short bike ride to various locations in central Eugene: the library, Farmers’ Market, Trader Joe’s, and a few others. Along the way, they chatted about some of the “tricks of the trade”: how to signal turns (just point where you plan to go!), rules of the road (it’s perfectly legal for bicyclists to roll through stop signs if there’s no traffic), and locking a bike. They also realized how much fun it is to ride a bike! All agreed that this is a trip worth offering again—so keep your eyes out for a future opportunity.
