Trip Report

We traveled south on I-5, taking the scenic Wilbur cut-off through Glide along the North Umpqua River; stopping at the Narrows (Swiftwater Park), where several salmon fishermen were hard at play and successful. Our mid-morning coffee-cookie break was at the Susan Creek Falls trailhead. Twenty of us hiked to the beautiful falls in perfect sunny weather. Then to the annual Wildflower in Glide held at the community hall and hosted by all volunteers. Hundreds of wildflowers and other things were nicely displayed with complete descriptions. Also available was information on toxic plants, non-native species, threatened plants plus sandwiches, chili, pie and soft drinks. A very worthwhile two hours - an event recommended for all Obsidians. On to Roseburg for the historic Joseph Lane House. Especially of interest because Gen. Lane was an important and controversial leader in the 19th Century. The house itself is southern colonial style and was constructed entirely from local products. The furnishings were varied and of special interest. The three docents were very good in guiding us through the first floor. We enjoyed a photo stop at the Historic Tree, an American elm located to front of the Douglas County Courthouse. A very impressive tree indeed and is somewhat similar to the cherry tree at our rose garden as it too is supported by steel posts and tension cables. A rest break at Stewart Park on the South Fork of the Umpqua. Quite a nice city park with multi facilities. A look-see at the campus of Umpqua Community College, and then home in Eugene at 5:00. Larry Edwards of Oregon Coachway did his usual great job.
