Trip Report

On a cool, sometimes wet day, 21 Obsidians and five guests traveled south on I-5, and took the Wilbur Cutoff along the North Umpqua River. The scenery is outstanding and the North Umpqua, unlike the McKenzie, has only been slightly impacted by development. Our mid-morning coffee break was at the Susan Creek trailhead, where 22 of us hiked the one-mile trail to the beautiful falls. Even the sun appeared briefly, much to the delight of several photographers. Then on to our second major destination-the annual Glide Wildflower Show held inside their community hall. Over 600 species were on display, very well presented.

During the day we visited the Colliding Rivers, the Narrows, which is usually a great fishing spot (but not today!), the heritage American Elm at the Douglas County Courthouse, Stewart Park and finally about 40 minutes in quaint historic Oakland. En route Ewart described the unique geology of the area. A hail storm prevented us from stopping for ice cream at Rice Hill. Driver John Goddard returned us to Eugene at 5:00 p.m.
