Description:

First snow shoe of the year. If the snow disappears I will convert this to a hike. We will travel up Hwy 58 to Gold Lake snow park. This trip is suitable for beginners. It a good warm up to make sure we have all the gear we need and it is in working order for the season. This is a road trip leading to Gold Lake shelter we will return the way we came. If you are planning on a season in the snow you will need a snow park permit. This can be obtained at Bergs Ski shop on 13th Ave. Most outdoor shops will sell these. I think the cost is $25.00 for the season and $5.00 for a day pass. You can rent snowshoes packages at Bergs also. If you are new to snowshoeing please practice putting SS on and off at home several times. You get very cold in the snow. Call me with any questions. 541-953-7046

Trip Report

Perfect conditions. No wind, rain or snow. Sunny sky’s with a packed surface with about 3 inches of fresh snow. Lunch at the bridge with the assist of several Clark’s Nutcracker in case we needed help getting lunch to our mouths. As we ended lunch someone saw what they thought was a coyote trot out on to the ice of the outlet and fall through. I think we all were thinking about what we could or should do to help it out. But we were saved as the parents of the dog came rushing to the edge of the water. Fortunately, for all of us the dog rescued itself. We did see the owners start takeing off layer to dry him off. We add another 3/4 of a mile to trip following blue diamonds around the lake edge before turning around and heading back to cars.
