Past Activity

Golden Gardens

  • Start date: 01/23/2025

  • Start time: 9:30 AM

Description:

Join us for a stroll around 3 ponds and learn about the past, present and future plans for this nature preserve. Hopefully we'll see the bald eagle pair, snowy egrets, fancy migrating ducks, and hawks. Binoculars will enhance the viewing. The trails aren't long so we'll be making some loops along the mulched paths. We'll likely start on the paved sidewalk to get an overview of the area.

To get to the kiosk, turn on Golden Gardens street off Barger, just after the stoplight at the school.

Trip Report

A very chilly morning as evidenced by the ice scrim on the pond, but we were bundled so we ambled. We didn\'t see the leucistic spotted towhee which is mostly white, but a cool sighting if you are lucky. And the owl that was spotted in the open field was actually a northern harrier - pretty clear as it flew off. We wondered where the hummingbird was getting sufficient nectar at this time of year. A great start to the day. This peaceful preserve will soon be a sprawling sports complex so get out there and enjoy the quiet of the ponds while you can.
