Trip Report

A two-day event, June 2-3, began at South Eugene High School parking lot at 8:00 a.m., then south down the coast via Drain. Stopped in Reedsport to visit the Sand Dune Headquarters where good displays and informative movie was shown. South toward North Bend, - going the "byways" turned left this side of the Coos Bay Bridge, and went northeast about 25 miles on a diminishing sized road to the end and the Golden Silver Falls Park. A short hike to Golden Falls - spectacular height, ruggedness, and flowing water made an impressive sight. Lunch in the park, and another short hike to Silver Falls with similar impressions. Magnificent old trees with many myrtlewood trees. Down to North Bend and check in at Pony Village Lodge early. Then another trip through Empire and Charleston and its U.O. Marine Biology Station, down to Shore Acres State Park with its beautifully maintained formal gardens. Back to Lodge, and by bus to Mo's restaurant in Coos Bay for great sea food dinners in separate area for the whole group.

Next morning off to Whiskey Run (a small stream noteworthy for early gold mining) 45 minutes to the beach with light breeze and lots of sunshine. Then up to Pacific Power and Light's electric windmill on a high cliff above the beach. Jim Cuthbert, the operator, explained the whole operation and started it running, showing us the complex computer controlled equipment inside the building. Then down toward Bandon, with a side trip through the waterfront, a stop at the breakwater to inspect the garnets, down a beach road, residential area, and a stop at the cheese factory for purchases and ice cream cones. Over to Myrtle Point by back "byways" again with geologic and local history comments along the way. Return via Roseburg, with lunch stop at park along Coquille River. Another ice cream stop at Rice Hill, where you get the mostest of the bestest at the lowest. Home by 5:00 p.m.

Participants were Mary Jane Arpin, Lois and Perry Baker, Margaret and Ewart Baldwin (leader), Gene and Katie Barnes, Carline Beck, Mary Bundy, Ingrid Carmichael, Bill Eaton (leader), Jane Hilt, Doris Frese, Laura Hayes, Bea LeFevre, Virginia Horton, Violet Marlowe, Ruth Nichols, Janice Pattison, Edie Post, Winona Sellard, Myrtle Smith, Ethel and Robin Steussy, and Mildred Weatherby.
