Trip Report

Obsidians at the March 24 Potluck at the Lodge were treated to a delightful account of the Reuls’ ten-day hiking tour of the Greek peninsula of Peloponnesus, under the guidance of the British walking company, EXPLORE. The hikes were generally of five to eight hours’ duration in rugged country - most would probably be rated an Obsidian "C". Trails were unlabeled: a guide is essential. The weather in June was very hot, making it necessary to carry lots of water (which is good, from springs).

Hikes were from one village to another, with sleeping and eating accommodations at small, unpretentious hotels or private homes. The food was generally not a gastronomic delight, and local wines were the worst Chuck had ever tasted! This was in contrast to the Reuls’ experience in Corsica (reported in the December, 1998 Bulletin). Evidently, the Greeks’ desire to be good heeds Socrates’ dictum, "Bad men live that they may eat and drink, whereas good men eat and drink that they may live".

The EXPLORE guides are knowledgeable and highlight the hikes with accounts of Greek history and mythology (this reviewer has some trouble keeping the two distinguished).

The Reuls again highly recommended EXPLORE for its inexpensive (half to one-third the cost of U.S. companies), well organized tours. A tour catalog can be had by phoning 1-800-227-8747. - Bep Fontana
