Trip Report

During this time of pandemic and restricted public gatherings, McKenzie River Trust opened its Green Island property, still after 15 years in process of habitation restoration, to self-guided visit this day. The windy, rainy weather pattern paused for a most enjoyable, rain-free pleasant three hours' walk, led by knowledgeable birder Randy Sinott, with help from our multiple eyes: 20 or 21 species of birds sighted (or heard -H-): Steller's jays, Red-tailed hawk, Mallard ducks, vee-formations of Cackling geese, Song Sparrow, Black-capped chickadees, Wild turkeys (two very large males), Ravens, Pacific wren, Spotted towhee, Cormorants, Great blue herons, Great white egret, Ravens, Black phoebes, Flickers (h), American wigeon, Downy woodpecker, Red-breasted sapsucker (up close and very dashing), Ruby-crowned kinglet...and many ducks and little brown birds not specifically ID'd in the cloudy lighting. We toured the south area; the north area where bird boxes can be found will have to wait for another visit. Everyone enjoyed getting out in this special place, grateful for the mild and dry weather break.
