Trip Report

On a lovely, sun-drenched morning we took the north loop trail. McKenzie River Trust welcomers said be sure to see the bird boxes, but joked that they would be difficult to locate... First delight was running into Dennis Arendt, who had just installed many boxes just the last week. He makes the bird nesting boxes and decorates them, including the roofs (and coating with three layers of shellac) in beautiful images of nature, birds, and famous artists and their iconic paintings, such as Van Gogh and his sunflowers, and starry night, Picasso, Matisse. They were not at all difficult to find. Tree Swallows swooped all around us -- Birder Randy Sinott counted at least 50 ot them, and we saw their dark feathers shimmer with colors in the sunlight. Kate is also a birder and spotted many birds as well. Western Bluebirds also delighted. We trekked on at least 4 miles, with 25 bird species encountered: Canada Goose, American Wigeon, California Quail, Anna's Hummingbird, Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Turkey Vulture, Belted Kingfisher, Red-breasted Sapsucker, American Kestrel, Steller's Jay, California Scrub-Jay, Black-capped Chickadee, Tree Swallow, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Bewick's Wren, Western Bluebird, Varied Thrush, American Robin, American Goldfinch, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Yellow-rumped Warbler. All seemes satisfied with our adventures away from the isolation of our houses during this too long period of Covid pandemia.
