Trip Report

Despite stormy weather predictions, 13 of us ambled our way for several hours about this lush riparian property with little to no rain - and next to no signage to guide or educate us ! McKenzie River Trust's Green Island is open to the public only a few days a year. We appreciated the one staff/volunteer at the gate who suggested we take a photo of the map board and stay on the graveled paths; there would be no further guidance for the day. Thinking we couldn't get too lost and slightly reassured that volunteers would be out looking for stragglers (a.k.a.lost hikers) at the 3 pm closing, we split into 2 groups, crossing only once late in the day. Phones recorded our efforts being 5.8 to 8 miles. Why an island you ask? Go yourself to see if you can learn the answer to that question. Wildlife reported: One large bounding deer, a pair of red-tail hawks, a few LBJs and a ton of scat -likely primarily well-feed coyote and maybe some berry-loving bears - and one beautiful turkey feather.
Green Island will be open to the public again Thanksgiving Friday. https://mckenzieriver.org/property/green-island/. And check the website for information on the Wild and Scenic Film Festival happening online on November 19th
