Description:

This trail is a hidden gem – not many people around; thinned out forest for 2/3 of the trail, beautiful views on the rest. The peak is 9 miles south of Silver Lake. There is a staffed look-out building at the top. This will be a slow-paced hike, jack-rabbits should fine another trail. We’ll pass the Cowboy Dinner Tree Restaurant in case meat-eaters want to stop for dinner on the drive out. Time permitting, we could possibly stop at the Fort Rock Homestead Village Museum on the way back.

Trip Report

We left rainy Eugene at 7:30, arrived at the trailhead at 10:20 with partly cloudy conditions, good visibility and no rain. The hike up, steep in spots, took about 2.5 hours. There is a fire lookout at the top, manned by a woman {haha} Yvonne, who offered us cans of pop and lots of information about her job, the area, forest fires … We spent a delightful 1.5 hours chatting with her, enjoying the sunshine and the beautiful 360 degree views.
