Hardesty Mountain

 • Start date: 11/09/2025

 • Start time: 8:00 AM

Description:

After the recent windy conditions there could be some deadfall to contend with. The trail climbs to an open ridge with a large meadow from which nearby Mount June can be seen. At the north end of the meadow is Sawtooth Rock which is an interesting rock formation which we will pass. The last two miles of the trail will be exploratory as I've not yet had the pleasure of walking that section yet. We will take a snack break at the top of Hardesty Mountain which used to have a fire lookout structure. The peak is overgrown and thus has no view. We will return the way we came. The hike is rated difficult for distance on this well-designed trail.

We will meet at the LCC east parking lot and leave promptly at 8:00. Take Hwy 58 to Dexter, right at Rattlesnake Road for 6.4 miles, left at Eagles Rest Road for 8.8 miles. We park at the Lost Creek Trailhead.

Trip Report

We had lots of sun and 60\'s temps for this November\'s day hike. It was uncharacteristically warm and clear for this time of year. We added a little distance and gain to the hike for the sake of three tempting side trails: One was a short, steep spur up to Sawtooth Rock. Another was for a lunch spot with a viewpoint, since Hardesty Mountain is bereft of such niceties. The third side trip was added to the two mile exploratory portion of the hike. It is a nice hike and one to be repeated.
Big Mountain, Small View
Walking miles and miles of up and up
Finding forests of trees all over the top

With trail signs pointing hither and yon
Will we finish this hike before dark or at dawn?

Alas, at the peak of ol\' Hardesty
We find that the view is still hard to see
