Harrisburg Museum, Schreiner’s Iris Gardens, Garland Nursery

Antique farm machinery, historic buildings, exceptional hand-crafted wooden models, beautiful flowers and (of course) a chance to shop. Come with us as we tour the Harrisburg Museum under the guidance of our own (Obsidian) Bill Arthur. This museum is dedicated to recognizing the area’s historic farming community with a wide variety of displays. We will have our coffee break at the museum. Late morning we will head north to Schreiner’s Iris Gardens at Salem. There will be plenty of time to stroll among the flowers. In business since 1925, Schreiner’s ten acre display gardens contain 500 named Iris varieties. __Bring a sack lunch__, there are picnic tables available. After lunch we travel to Garland Nursery at Corvallis. Garland Nursery is a 4^^th generation family owned business providing a wide variety of quality plants, garden supplies, and an interesting selection of home décor and gift items. All this on six acres in a peaceful, park like setting. If you enjoy gardening, this is the place for you. We will leave Shopko parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and plan to return around 5:30 p.m.

Trip Report

Under cloudy skies our small group headed out for a day of enjoying the beauty of the Willamette Valley. Our first stop was the Harrisburg Area Museum where we were impressed by the well-kept appearance of the buildings and displays. We had our coffee break in the picnic pavilion using the forty foot long picnic tables and benches. These impressive pieces were all cut from one fir tree by the Hull-Oaks Lumber Company near Corvallis. Bill Arthur and Ellis Dodd each took a group on tour of all buildings and displays. We enjoyed hearing stories about the acquisition and uses of the antique machinery. Of special interest was the Bruce Witmer collection of scale model historic buildings, including Crater Lake Lodge, Noah’s Ark and a full set of farm buildings. Mr. Witmer was a master model maker who came to Harrisburg from Pennsylvania in 1959. We were pleased that Ray Jensen joined us for the museum tour.

As we left the museum the sun came out to help make a leisurely drive through the farm lands even lovelier. We saw fields of meadow foam, red clover and iris in bloom, flocks of sheep, a large variety of blooming trees and shrubs, and lovely river crossings. Arriving at Schreiner’s Iris Gardens about lunch time, we enjoyed our sack lunches at the picnic tables overlooking the floral display gardens. After a time spent strolling among the flowers, enjoying the cut flower displays and the gift shop, we headed south to Garland Nursery at Corvallis. Again, we enjoyed walking among the displays of flowers, shrubs, trees and garden art. Several of us brought home items for our own gardens. Final stop for the day was Hazelnut Hill for ice cream and purchasing hazelnut treats. All in all it was a lovely day with a great group of Obsidians.
