Trip Report

Forty-two people boarded the bus at South Eugene High School at 8 a.m. June 4 to take a historical tour of the Willamette Valley, concentrating on Yamhill County. The group was very fortunate to have Mrs. Victor P. Morris talk to us about the early history in the areas covered as we drove along. The bus traveled I-5 to Salem, then the Wallace Road to Dayton. Places of interest viewed there were Mrs. Morris's grandparents' home, the blockhouse, and the Joel Palmer house. The next early Yamhill County town visited was Lafayette where the group toured the excellent Yamhill County Historical Museum housed in an old Poling church. A farm museum was in a building close by. Sack lunches were eaten in the Chehalem Park in Newberg, then the Minthorn House, early childhood home of Herbert Hoover, was visited.

The drive from Newberg to Yamhill went by the marker and early residence of Ewing Young, an important person in the early history of that area. Elma Shuck, from Woodburn and whose ancestors came across the plains and took out a donation land claim near Yamhill, spoke of that early history. Dessert was served to the group at the Flying M Ranch located ten miles west of Yamhill. The lodge is situated in a beautiful area on the North Yamhill River near the early toll road to Tillamook. The trip home was made via 99W through McMinnville, Monmouth, Corvallis, arriving in Eugene at 6:15 p.m. Everyone in the group felt most grateful to Mrs. Morris for making this a very interesting and informative trip.

Those enjoying the excursion were Carlene Beck, Jessie Bork, Lorene Bressler, Ingrid Carmichael, Bernie Claypool, Maxine Chism, Euphemia Culp, Mildred Dart, Virginia DeMers, Bill Eaton, Jan Gund, Bette Hack, Evelyn Hile, Beatrice Hill, Jane Hilt, Alice Hoffman, Helen Hughes, Catherine Jones, Virginia Kapsa, Lois Morse, Frances Newsom, Liz Officer, Hazel Peck, Lois Person, Eileen Pollard, Edie Post, Dorothy and Clarence Scherer, Lois Schreiner, Maryelton end Frank Schutz, Winona Sellard, Elma Shuck, Grace Smith, Val Thoenig, Virginia West, Margaret Wiese, Frances Witzel, Freda and Harold Young, commentator Grace Morris, leader Mary Mallery and coach driver Baxter Shaw.
