Description:

Meet at Santa Clara Plaza parking lot, N River Rd near Burger King. From the trailhead we will hike through a small pine stand into a meadow, then along a gently rising grassy ridge. Our destination will be an eroded volcanic vent and radial dyke that erupted roughly 30-36 m.y.a.
Participants will manage their own transportation. Obsidian protocols for social distancing will be observed on the hike/ride. Refer to main website page for information.

Trip Report

The lower trail has been improved during the last year with many of the small limbs across the trail removed and others modified into water bars. On the meadow trail, the rocks were often wet and slippery. Visibility was limited to about a quarter mile by cloud cover over the nearby ridges. When we reached the Horse Rock dike complex, were were up in the clouds and visibility was limited to about 200 feet. As we found various places to eat lunch. the clouds lifted off and by the time we finished eating, there were long sunbreaks. On the way down we stopped at a few times to enjoy the view. Wild flowers were everywhere.
