Description:

Trip Description: From the trail head we will hike through small pine stand into a meadow, then along a gently rising grassy ridge. Our destination will be an eroded volcanic vent and radial dike from a volcano that erupted along and ancient coast line in the Oligocene. This is rare look at some rocks that formed the old Western Cascade volcanic arc some 28 m.y. before the High Cascade volcanic ark formed about 2-3 m.y.a. If we are lucky, there will also be a few early wildflowers and a good view of the South Willamette Valley.

Trip Report

We hiked up Horse Ridge through colorful meadows of wildflowers. Clouds floated above and around us on a cool, misty morning. At Horse Rock, Tom Rundle offered a geology talk about the local dike features and an overview of the geologic history off the Western Cascade Range. After lunch, we returned to the trail amid more wildflowers and bright sunshine.
