Description:

I put Hunts Cove as the name of this hike but we WILL shorten it to just Pamelia lake or walk around to PCT junction. The PCT is closed from this junction (mile ~2027) on the Willamette National Forest to near Triangle Lake north of Olallie Lake (~mile 2048.7) on the Mt. Hood National Forest. We might meet some folks coming out to civilization. Whatever we do we have to stay together under the under the permit rules.
7/12 reports of lots of trees down on the trail to Hunt's Cove. From Emily Rice 8/7: The blowdown was about average on the main Hunts Creek trail up to the jct with trail that goes to Hanks and Hunts Lake. Only about 6 spots that we needed to hike around, crawl under or heave our bodies over trees. The trail to the lakes was the challenge. We counted 16 spots over 1/4 milet that required extra effort to negotiate. It probably added at about 30 45 minutes to the hike each way. None of the trees had been cut out by a trail maintenance crew although someone had trimmed some branches off to make the climb over the log a little easier.

Once at Hanks Lake, the creek crossing was another major challenge. Definitely needed some flexibility and strength. The main camping spot iat Hanks s a giant mess of blow down. The trail from Hanks to Hunts Lake has just few trees to crawl over or go around.

The entire trail was a wonderful experience for us, but I can't say I would recommend it as a day hike. People need to be able to contort their bodies to get around, over and under many of the clusters of logs and branches. And the ending at the lake is not so great.

Trip Report

On our trip up to the trailhead we were met with a pleasant surprise---sprinkles. As we turned on the the North Santiam Highway we beheld a wonderful, much desired sight. Wet pavement!! The cooler temperature made some hikers wish they had worn long pants. The hike up to the lake was no sweat. Literally. After the heat we'd been having this hike was a pleasant change. We stopped briefly at the lake and then headed on up to the junction with the PCT. At this point the trail was clearly signed closed. We met 4 PCT hikers that were coming out on the Pamelia Lake trail and would have to pick up their journey north on the other side of last year's wildfires.
We came back to the lake and had lunch. The cloudy skies blocked any views of Jefferson and the reports of down trees had already nixed the original plan of going to Hunt's Cove. Hopefully today's wonderful group of hikers will consider coming back to lead hikes to Hunt's and Grizzly Peak.
