Trip Report

The original plan for this hike was to take the Independence Pass trail to Crater Viewpoint, continuing past Tephra's Pinnacle to Norway Pass, then return in a loop via the Independence Ridge trail. However, at the junction where the loop begins, we found the Pass trail had been washed out by a slide and was closed. Therefore, we hiked to Norway Pass and returned via the Ridge trail (same distance and elevation). The wildflowers were abundant and very colorful, and Norway Pass, where we ate lunch, is a gorgeous overlook of Spirit Lake and Mt St Helens.
