Description:

This hike will be a loop starting at the Deer Creek trailhead on Route 15 off Hwy 20. We will hike along a nature trail paralleling the road about 1 mile passing by the Tombstone parking area and then crossing Hwy 20 to the Cone Peak trailhead. This trail climbs up through old growth forest then opens to often flower-packed meadows. When we reach the junction with the Iron Mountain trail, we will climb to the observation deck at the top, and finally return on the Iron Mountain Trail. Wildflowers should be splendid. Snow patches on the trail are possible.

Trip Report

Ben Brown's Iron Mt. hike was so popular, that it was decided to start a 2nd same day/same hike option. To prevent 20 Obsidians from over-loading the Look Out platform for lunch, this hike started 1/2 hour later and began at Deer Creek trailhead which created at least a hour's separation between the two groups. It was a perfect-weather day with profuse swaths of larkspur, paintbrush, cat's ears and more (although the consensus was that peak wildflower bloom was still to come). There were only a couple of small snow patches to step on and one fallen tree lengthwise on the tail which took caution to scramble over and around. Nearly everyone enjoyed a late lunch at the look-out with views of snow-covered Cascade peaks.
