I have a permit for a four night backpack in the John Muir Wilderness.

The entry point is Duck Pass, near Mammoth Lakes (located east and south of Yosemite), but the remaining route itinerary, camp sites, and the exit point are flexible.
This is not a trip for beginners.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: Gear and food for 5 days and 4 nights of high elevation wilderness backpacking. Be prepared for rain, cold, or whatever else might happen. Water purification system of your choice. Bear canisters are required, and this will add about 2.5 pounds to your load. There will be food and overnight expenses for the drive down and back.
