Trip Report
The Kah-nee-ta trip was well planned by Jane Hilt and Bill Eaton (co-leader in absentia) with an assist on materials provided by Frances Newsom. We proceeded north via I-5 to a point near Gladstone then via Hwy 212 to Sandy and on towards Timberline. As we climbed toward Mt. Hood we rose above the clouds to find the mountain freshly covered by new snow and under bright blue skies. After dining we were shown a movie that emphasized the history including the artistry and craftsmanship as well as the dedication by FDR in 1937.
We arrived at the village by the Kah-nee-ta swimming pool at 4 p.m. in time to swim before dinner. We had a get-together that night with popcorn and other goodies. The next morning, after a swim, most of us bussed into the town of Warm Springs to a store, museum and gift shop. After an afternoon swim we bussed to the lodge for a slide show and entertainment provided by Andy Lucas, and then a later dinner.
We left by 8:30 a.m. going across the Deschutes and up the Vanora Grade through Madras with a stop at the Peter Skene Ogden overlook on the Crooked River. Then we journeyed through Redmond to downtown Bend where we had time to hike around, view the park along Mirror Pond and to search for gastronomic gems. Most sampled Jens pasteries. He is a famed chef who had been written up in the Oregonian and this bit was one of many that Frances had saved and produced at the strategic moment. We arrived at the High Desert Museum, about 6 miles south of Bend, to find our guide waiting. She lead us through the outside where we viewed the otter, the friendly porcupines, the red-tailed hawk and the horned owl named Owliver. Inside were many displays as well as snakes and another cute pigmy owl, plus many inanimate displays. The museum was well worth the time and would justify repeat visits.
John O'Connell, Jr. herded our bus home via Willamette Pass, and we arrived in Eugene shortly after 5 p.m. The weather was reasonably good and all seemed to enjoy the all too brief visit to points of interest.
