Trip Report
We left in good weather and drove to Portland to pick up four members, then ate lunch near the mouth of the Deschutes and on over Satus Pass, Blewitt Pass to Wenatchee for the night. Forest fires were burning bright and we had to detour east of the Columbia to Chelan and then to Fields Point where we took the "Lady of the Lake" to Lucerne. A bus took us to Holden Village which is located 11 miles up Railroad Creek in a U-shaped glaciated Valley. The village is an old mining camp operated by the Lutheran Church.
We spent the first afternoon looking around but the first full day saw most of us hiking to Hart Lake or beyond, a round trip of 9 miles. The second day several went to Holden Lake which occupies a cirque at base of Bonanza Peak. It was a round trip of nearly 9 miles. Those that stayed near camp visited Tenmile Creek Falls, walked the nature trail, and attended lectures and programs. Many took advantage of the opportunity to go to Stehekin at the end of the lake as a side trip.
Our driver had had water pump trouble on the coach and remained in Wenatchee to fix it. We were delighted to find the coach waiting for us when we arrived back at Fields Point. The forest fires had subdued so we were able to drive to Leavenworth via Entiat. At Leavenworth we stayed in the Enzian Motel which, like the rest of the town, is done up as a Bavarian village.
The following morning we waited to hear the alpenhorn played then continued westward over Stevens Pass then south through Bellevue and on to I-5 to Olympia, where we had lunch by Tumwater Falls. A flock of Canadian Geese were there cropping the grass. We arrived in Eugene in good time.
