Description:

Four nights camping in the North Cascades in Eightmile Group Campground on the Icicle River eight miles from Leavenworth, Wa. The campground has potable water, toilets, a large, flat, area for cars and RVs and good tent sites close to the river. Multiple hiking and biking opportunities are available in nearby Alpine Lakes Wilderness. There are also white water rafting options available. The nearby Bavarian style mountain town of Leavenworth is a major Washington tourist attraction.
Campers will be responsible for their own breakfast and lunch. Group dining will be in camp during the first 3 nights with a Bavarian restaurant experience scheduled for the 4th night (no-host). Also on the 4th night, an outdoor amphitheater production of "Sound of Music" will be an option at a cost of $35 per ticket.
Trip price, including first 3 nights dinner, some snacks and campground rental, is $50 for members and $55 for non-members. A $10 non-refundable registration fee is due at the time of sign-up. Send a check for $10, payable to the Obsidians, to Dan Christensen, 505 Sweet Gum Lane, Eugene, 97401-7003. The $40 balance is payable by June 1st. Refunds for subsequent cancelation will be made only if the spot is filled. Let Dan know by May 1st if you wish to attend the "sound of Music". The $35 ticket cost should be then added to your remaining registration fee balance due by June 1st..

At a minimum, plan on camping gear for 4 nights, food for breakfast, lunch and supplemental snacks and adequate hiking gear and boots. You should plan on cool nights and rain gear to protect against summer thunderstorms.

Trip Report

Seventeen Obsidians journeyed 400 miles to Eightmile Campground on the Icicle River near Leavenworth, WA for a late summer Extended Trip. We camped for four nights and had three full days for hiking either in the adjacent Alpine Lakes Wilderness or in the area surrounding Stevens Pass, about 40 miles from our camp.

Two or three moderate to difficult hikes went out every day to a number of beautiful lakes in the area. Colchuck and Stuart Lakes in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and Lake Valhalla on the Pacific Crest Trail near Stevens Pass were some of the favorites. At the end of a good day of hiking, Jim Whitfield’s newly constructed solar shower units proved to be a big hit. Happy hour each evening was popular as usual, and for dinner, three different groups of campers collaborated to provide tasty and plentiful meals for the first three nights.

On the fourth night, most of us traveled into Leavenworth to soak up the Bavarian atmosphere that the town is famous for, and for dinner, drinks and singing to the music of an accordionist dressed in lederhosen at a Bavarian restaurant, King Ludwig’s. Later in the evening, many attended a performance of The Sound of Music, staged in a beautiful outdoor setting with the mountains as a backdrop. The reviews by those who attended were uniformly positive.


The weather was perfect, the campsite was accommodating, and our friendly and congenial group made for a wonderful trip to a very beautiful area.
