Description:

The city of Lebanon, along with community volunteers, have created more than 50 miles of trails in the last few years. Let's check it out!

We'll begin our day on Main Street, where we will pick up sweet and savory treats at Hazella's Scandinavian Bakery and Sugar Vibes. We'll take them to the North Shore trailhead, hike its 1.23 miles length, and on the way back, stop at Cheadle Lake to tour the 1-mile Island Loop Trail. Then we'll drive to McDowell Creek Falls Park for the lovely 1.8 mile waterfall loop.

The Lebanon trails are well-maintained and accessible. The McDowell Creek Falls trail is steep and slippery in places.

Trip Report

For many of us, this was the first time we had explored Lebanon (or in a couple of cases, even been there at all) and we agreed that the Lebanon downtown renaissance is progressing nicely. We started our day at Hazella Bake Shop (the name is the English version of Dutch gezillig "cosy") which lived up to its name and has a wonderful selection of sweet and savory pastries. Among our faves were the cardamom custard buns, ginger almond cake, leek and parmesan braid, lingonberry danish and blackberry hand pie. After a stop at Sugar Vibes, we ambled for 4 miles back and forth and around the North Shore Trail and Island Loop Trail. Build Lebanon Trails, the volunteer org that is developing an extensive system of trails for the commiunity, is also restoring habitat in the area. Birds we saw: Canada goose (of course), coot/mudhen, egret, heron, a heron rookery, cormorant and eagles on the way there. Also some very pretty ducks that we couldn't identify. As the habitat is restored, this should be a fantastic spot for viewing local and migratory birds.

We then took the back roads to McDowell Creek Falls Park for the 1.6 mile waterfall loop, which was green and lush. Although I had promised everyone that we would get rain, we had perfect weather and the rain didn't start until we were nearly back in Eugene. It was a nice day, and after all our exploring we were still back in Eugene early in the afternoon.
