Description:

Litter pickup hike with car shuttle. Slow paced hike as we look for litter. We will meet at the Ridgeline trailhead on Willamette and 52nd Street and shuttle to the main parking lot on Willamette. From there we will hike up to the top of Spencer Butte picking up litter as we go, head down from the summit and take the trail to 52nd Street.

Meet at trailhead on Willamette and 52nd Street at 9:00 am.

Trip Report

Four Obsidians, equipped with plastic bags, work gloves and trowels, set off on the main Spencer Butte trail to pick up litter. Within a few minutes we found our first of many piles of dog poop. Janet was so good at spotting these piles that after 15 minutes she returned to the trail head to deposit her bag into the trash bin. Thankfully, as we progressed further up the trail we found less and less litter. At the summit the fog was thick but our spirts were excellent as we met other hikers who, upon learning that we were picking up litter, were extremely appreciative of our efforts. One group, who hikes daily on the west side, told us they pick up trash and gave us their findings of that morning. We sustained ourselves with muffins and chocolate at the summit and returned to the W.52nd St. trailhead after 3 hours of litter collecting estimated to be around 13 gallons.
