Macduff Mtn hike

  • Start date: 06/28/2025

  • Start time: 9:00 AM

Description:

This year will be the 94th anniversary of the placing of a brass plaque on Macduff Mt to honor Nelson Macduff, a former forest service supervisor and Obsidian member. I'll be hiking to the summit from road 411, a steep rough road not suitable for low clearance vehicles. The trail is a well engineered route up a steep ridge through a well shaded forest with some great wildflowers and rhododendrons. From the summit we'll hopefully have a clear view of the Cascades and the McKenzie River Valley. Some of our group may stop at Takoda's after the hike.

This trip has a relaxed departure time of 9am. Please show up 15 minutes early to allow time to organize transportation.

Trip Report

The annual June 28 hike up Macduff Mt was accomplished in great weather and abundant wildflowers. The forest service road up to our trailhead was in good condition, as it had been freshly graveled to accommodate the logging going on in the area. Fortunately, it being a Saturday, we encountered no log trucks. While the views from the summit were great, a colony of ants has taken over the top. None of our group of 12 were able to sit down to enjoy their lunch without being swarmed by ants. I’ve led this hike every year since 2015, and this has never been a problem before. I’ll take an anteater with me next year.
