Main Trail Naturalization

Description:

For this outing we will be working to re-establish and naturalize the Main Trail's trail corridor. After scraping away and returning gravel to the tread surface we will transfer about a foot deep of duff, leaf litter, sticks, and logs along the edges of the trail to help mitigate tread creep and disguise the migration of gravel that has occurred. We will also have the opportunity to pick up litter and clean the trailhead kiosk and steps.

Meet at the main Spencer Butte Trailhead parking lot, the paved lot on Willamette. Work party goes from 9-12 am.

Trip Report

Six stalwart Obsidians met on a very brisk morning for some trail maintenance. We quickly grabbed gloves and tools and started hiking up the Main Trail to keep warm. We stopped a little below the Junction Meadow to start our work. In this section of trail a lot of gravel has migrated off the raised turnpike to cover a couple of feet of the trail side. We scraped duff (sticks, moss, fir needles, and leaves) into buckets and spread it over the gravel before adding bigger sticks and logs to help encourage people to stay on the trail. We stopped about halfway through the morning to enjoy chocolate zucchini bread made and brought by Janet.
