Description:

NOTE START TIME CHANGE. This beautiful hike in the Mt. Jefferson wilderness will be fairly easy if we go as far as the falls and the lake, and difficult if we do the full 11-mile trek to the Marion Mountain lookout for the splendid views. For now, I'm leaving the Marion Mountain leg optional because I'm still recovering from a knee injury, but please contact me if you have questions or a preference for the longer vs. the shorter hike.

Marion Lake is very swimmable, and a wonderful place for picnicking and relaxing. So even if we don't go all the way to the top of Marion Mountain, it will be well worth the drive. We'll plan on a stop at Takoda's on the way back, so be sure to check in with your driver about that.

I've scored 12 wilderness passes for that day, so even though there isn't a trip fee, you'll still each owe me a buck.

There will be a few miles of gravel road to the trailhead, and the rest is paved, so the drive should be accessible for all vehicle types.

Trip Report

Our Marion Lake outing was a bit discombobulated before we ever took the first step - original leader Kathie Carpenter tested positive for covid so we scrambled for new leadership. Dave Cooper flipped a coin and Elizabeth Grant was anointed leader and Buzz Blumm Assistant leader. Then we moved the departure up an hour; and if that was not enough, the Amazon lot was overtaken by a city-sanctioned event resulting in parking confusion and departure delays.
We finally got underway 25 minutes late, causing us to miss Annette Leong who was meeting us at the trailhead {we found out later that she had started up the trail, and we never encountered her} - so sad!
So the remaining six of us started hiking on the well maintained trail - a lovely trek up through the forest to the shores of Marion Lake - a beautiful scene with the sun shimmering on the water and Three Fingered Jack about 8 miles to the east, towering and dominant.
Elizabeth the Brave was the only swimmer in the group - I think the water temperature was 60 degrees. There was a couple getting married at the lake, and their photographer was kind enough to snap our group photo.
We all had a great time on that beautiful day.
