Trip Report

This snowshoe trip was originally scheduled for Potato Hill. As we met up in the morning, Kathy informed us that the Forest Service had closed the area around Potato Hill for helicopter logging because it was in the section that burned last summer. What to do, since we had all our gear and were full of energy? We decided to head out to the Maxwell sno-park and snowshoe up to the Mountain View shelter and take the outer cutoff loop back to the sno-park. This revised trip worked out flawlessly. Snow conditions were excellent, with 18-24” of fresh powder on top of a 2-3 foot base. The weather us nice and sunny most of the day with a brief snow shower up at the shelter. The trail up to the shelter was nicely broken which made for an easy snowshoe. Coming down on the cutoff trail was found to be unbroken for about 2 miles. We shared the lead position because it’s very exhausting breaking trail in fresh powder when you’re sinking up to your knees. We all pulled through as a group and I believe everyone had an enjoyable experience.
