Description:

This hike goes past Twin Lake then switchbacks up the side of an old volcano for great close-up views of Three Fingered Jack. The trail was just cleared last year so I expect few obstructions.

Trip Report

While the Willamette Valley had mostly cloudy skies and cool temperatures our trail up Maxwell Butte was mostly in the sun and a rather warm day. I did this hike six years ago with the Obsidians and we counted 150 trees across the trail. Fortunately it's now down to a much easier to handle ten but the trail could still use some clearing There were a few mosquitoes the first mile of the trail and so some of us applied Deet but they seemed to disappear as the day progressed. It took us about 2 ½ hours to trudge up the switchbacks to the summit where we immediately found a shady spot to cool down and have our lunch. We occasionally walked over to the sunnier and much warmer summit to enjoy great close-up views of Jack and the rest of the Cascades. On our drive home we made a quick stop at Tokoda's for a cool drink and appetizers.
