Maxwell Butte Log-out

Description:

THURSDAY ONLY, July 24. Our goal: to clear most logs off the Maxwell Butte trail. The lower two miles of the trail (which had the worst obstructions) have been cleared, so this trip has been reduced from a two-day to a one-day event on Thursday, July 24. We'll be following forest service regulations for volunteers which means all will be covered by forest service insurance. Working at almost 6000 feet elevation, temperatures should be moderate. Safety is highest priority, so we'll use special tools and techniques to reduce wear and tear on our bodies and avoid injury. Experienced sawyers will instruct anyone wanting some crosscut saw experience.

Trip Report

When Obsidians hiked to Maxwell Butte last fall, they encountered over 180 logs across the trail, causing leader Janet Jacobsen to begin her trip report: "I don't want to lead this hike again." The High Cascade Forest Volunteers (HCFV) had considered working on the trail, but the Forest Service had some plans to realign deeply eroded portions of the trail. When it turned out that wouldn't happen for several years (at the earliest) we decided to go to work to make the trail passable. Some Chainsaw Outlaw made the work much easier by (very illegally) clearing the first two miles, leaving only one day's work for our crosscut saw crew. Janet, Jim, and Steve returned from the hike last fall to help clear the trail, and Jim Suiter from HCFV joined the party. We cleared most of the logs on the way up, arrived at the top for a late lunch and some limited view to the east, then did some final cleanup on the return. The trail remains badly eroded in places, but stepping out of the trench isn't a big problem. The trail's passable for now thanks to the work of a great crew!
