Description:

We will drive north of Corvallis to Northwest Lester Avenue to Chip Ross Park parking lot. We will hike up Dan’s Trail to the 1,495 ft. Dimple Hill (7.6 miles round trip) and then a 1.5 mile loop trail to Ross Park . Our group will stay together since there many intersections. From there we can enjoy a view of Corvallis and take time to see the memorial for Willi Unsoeld who died in an avalanch on Mt. Rainier in 1979. Willie climbed with the Obsidians. One of the climbs was North Sister with Bob and Laurence Moffitt in 1942. In 1963 Willie made the first ascent of Mt. Everest’s West Ridge.
For more information about the area, see Sullivan’ Oregon Coast and Coast Range hiking book. The McDonald Forest was donated to the OSU College of Forestry by Mary McDonald in 1925 for the purpose of strengthening the forestry program

Trip Report

We stopped first at the scenic viewpoint in Chip Ross Park for a group photo by the Willie Unsoeld monument . Then the rain poured giving us unlimited opportunities to test our rain gear. Karen shared blast off brownies to celebrate Darian's birthday before we had a quick five minute lunch break and then blasted back to the cars. There was no need to take time to inventory who was the driest hiker. Two persons from California walked with us. Thanks to Dave Cooper who checked his GPS when our maps wilted in the rain and the signage was not available at the many trail and road intersections.
