Description:

This is the hike called Rooster Rock in Sullivan’s Central Cascades 5th edition #15, but for this trip I plan to follow a climber’s trail an extra mile or so to the base of some of the fancifully named spires such as Rabbit Ears and Turkey Monster. These give the small wilderness area its name.

Plan on 6-7 miles, 2400’ elevation gain, and some steep off-trail hiking. Wear long pants because of poison oak and brush.

Trip Report

Two hikers cancelled that morning, so just two of us drove to the Foster Lake overlook in Sweet Home to meet Paul. His local knowledge was essential, because a spring/summer raptor nesting closure prohibited us from hiking to the larger spires in the Menagerie Wilderness, such as the Rabbit Ears and the Turkey Monster. That would be a long day from the trailhead on highway 20 in any case. Paul guided Liz and Gordon to see the Chicken and the Hen, just downslope from Rooster Rock, which is the most common goal for hikers on this trail. All three formations have bolts and routes on them, and Paul recounted some of his memories from a life of rock climbing in Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming. For three venerable climbers, dreaming of great routes, this was a pleasurable way to spend a cool sunny day in the cascades.
