Description:

We'll begin our day on the river at the Lower Canyon Creek Campground, following the west bank all the way to Lower Bridge Campground (5.5 miles), which will be our lunch stop. From there we'll cross over to the east bank for 3 miles, and then cross back to the west side at the Wizard Falls fish hatchery, for a total of 11 miles RT. This will be an unhurried stroll along a beautiful and well maintained trail, with not a lot of up and down.

The drive and parking lot are doable for all vehicle types.

The drive to the trailhead is long, so please be a bit early and ready to hit the road by 7:30. The days are getting shorter and I don't want to be driving back after dark!

Trip Report

The Metolius was its usual gorgeous self, and it was a wonderful day to be on the river. Eugene was misty and smokey from the Cedar Creek Fire at 7:30 when we left, but in the mountains the air was sparkling clear. We started at Lower Canyon Creek Campground and hiked the west bank 5.5 miles to Lower Bridge Campground, where we crossed the Lower Bridge and looped back for 3 miles on the east bank to the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery. There, we crossed back over to the west side for the final 2.5 miles to our cars, where we were shocked to see an unattended campfire smoldering in a campsite on the edge of the forest. Good citizen Marguerite warned the site's occupants and helped them put it out.

This trail is fairly level the whole way, making it the perfect hike for somebody recovering from a knee injury. There are enough entry points, bridges and turnaround spots that you can easily adjust the length to your abilities. Remember to bring quarters to buy fish food at the Hatchery, and wear layers. Temps were in the high forties when we hit the trail, but reached the low 80's along the sunny stretches of the trail in the afternoon.
