Description:

In this free online Zoom presentation, OSU's Susanne Brander will be discussing recent research findings from her and collaborators' labs on micro and nanoplastic occurrence in the environment and effects on aquatic organisms. This includes field work on PNW marine organisms such as rockfish and mussels, and behavioral responses of larval fish, measured in the lab, to commonly detected microplastics such as tire wear particles.

Trip Report

OSU presenter Dr. Susanne Brander offered a timely and informative slide show and talk about microplastics on Zoom to 38 Obsidians on November 17. She and staff at her lab are investigating the amount, kinds and toxicity of these small particles and fibers found in marine animals such as rockfish. The lack of data and regulation make the issue of microplastics a large issue at this time. She explained there are microplastics and nanoplastics in our air and in wastewater sludge, and added that fibers from many sources, not only plastics, are worse as they are more abundant. We can learn more by following PLASTICAST, an online media project highlighting plastic pollution research and policy.
